Dalby sale 7 June 2017: Quality lines sell to dearer trend

There was a small reduction in supply and buyer attendance was generally good and included some additional support from an interstate export processor. There was a wide variation in the quality of the young light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock and average prices eased, however good quality lines sold to a dearer trend. Average prices for medium weight yearling steers and heifers to feed for the domestic market improved. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed experienced very little change in price. The younger end of the heavy grown steers to export slaughter lifted in price while the bullock portion sold to firm demand. Prices for cows varied as the sale progressed with most of the medium weights averaging 2c to 5c/kg cheaper. However some large runs of good heavy cows towards the end of the sale saw average prices improve by 2c/kg.

A fairly large sample of mixed sex calves returned to the paddock at an average of 371c with some steer calves making to 425.2c/kg. Light weight yearling steers sold to restockers at an average of 371c with some top end quality lines reaching 412.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 348c and made to 363.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed averaged in the early 320c range and made to 334.2c/kg. A good supply of light weight yearling heifers sold to restockers and backgrounders, to average 334c, with sales to 336.2c/kg. Stronger supermarket support on the medium weight yearling heifers lifted average prices by 3c to 322c with sales to 336.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed sold in the 290c/kg range.

The younger end of the heavy grown steers to export slaughter made to 320.2c to average 306c and the best of the bullocks made to 318.2c to average 301c/kg. Restockers were very active on plain condition cows with a good sample averaging 235c with some to 254.2c/kg. Medium weight 2 scores to processors mostly sold around 213c with sales to 220.2c/kg. Good heavy cows made to 258.2c, a fairly large sample averaging 247c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 280c/kg.

Grant Daniel Long’s Joe Lehman said the market was firm to dearer, small percentage of plainer cattle was yarded.

“Most of the yarding was still in good condition,” Mr Lehman said.

“We do need rain to lift oat crops to keep market going.”

Mr Lehman also noted the sad passing of Graham Egan from Glen Innes, NSW. “Graham was one of the top auctioneers that I’ve ever seen in action – no nonsense sort of bloke”.
