Cattle came from local areas together with 400 head from far western Queensland and over 800 head from South Australia and north western New South Wales. Quality was mixed, however there were some very good lines of heavy cows and young cattle through the yard. The buyer panel was keen to go following the Easter break and prices for prime cows, grown steers and heifers showed an improvement.

Vealer steers sold to 354c, averaging 332c/kg for the best bred lines. Vealer heifers sold to average 275c/kg for the best. Light yearling steers reached a top of 326c and averaged 306c with heavier lines experiencing an easing trend to average 285c/kg. Yearling heifers returned averages in the mid 270c/kg range.

Grown steers to feed sold to 290c, averaging close to 280c/kg. 4 score bullocks averaged 278c with prime steers making 287c/kg to processors. The trade purchased grown heifers to a top of 275c and an average of 268c/kg. 2 score cows returned to the paddock to a top of 210c while 4 score cows sold at an improved average of 235c and a top of 243c/kg. Heavy bulls improved to reach a top of 273c/kg.

3935 cattle were yarded in Dalby today, which included consignments from Aramac, Blackall, North West NSW as well as the local area. Prices lifted across the board with well-presented export cattle the most improved. Cows were 8-10c better, topping at 243c, while bullocks got to 293c to average 278c, 10c better than last week. – Jordan Wenham, GDL, Dalby
