Beef Central, 30/08/2018

Video market report from Ray White Eastern Rural’s Wyatt Wrigley

Yarding 4145 Change 1014

Numbers increased by over 1000 head to 4145 and overall quality of the export slaughter cattle was generally good, however there was a wide variation in the standard of the young cattle.

Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating. Light weight yearling steers to restockers did not respond to the recent rain event to average 6c/kg cheaper. However, light weight yearling heifers improved by 4c/kg pushed on by some interstate support. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 5c better and the heavy weights to feed improved by 16c to 17c/kg. Medium and heavy weight yearling heifers to the trade lifted in price by 10c to 12c/kg. Heavy grown steers and bullocks averaged 15c to 19c/kg better.

A relatively large sample of cows sold to a dearer market with gains of 9c to 16c/kg. Steer calves returning to the paddock made to 279.2c to average 268c and the heifer calves mostly sold around 197c with some to 218.2c/kg. A large sample of light weight yearling steers sold to restockers at an average of 263c with the occasional pen to 290c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged close to 270c and made to 283.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed mostly sold in the early 270c range with some to 285c/kg.

The largest sample of light weight yearling heifers averaged 221c and made to 239.2c and the lesser quality lines averaged 176c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to the trade made to 265c to average 248c and the heavy weights made to similar money to average 255c/kg. Heavy steers to export slaughter made to 298.2c to average 281c/kg. Bullocks made from 260c to 306.2c/kg with the younger lines in the higher end of the price range. Medium 2 score cows averaged 180c and the best of the medium weights averaged 221c and sold to 237.2c/kg. Good heavy cows mostly sold around 231c with some from western districts reaching 244.2c/kg. Heavy bulls mostly sold around 239c with some top quality bulls reaching 280c/kg to return $2,954/head.
