Dalby Sale 12 Sep 2018: Prices improve for most classes

Numbers increased by over 1000 head, with agents penning 5291 head at Dalby. Buyer attendance was good and included some extra interstate operators. Overall, quality was generally good and cows were in the largest numbers.

Prices improved for most classes, with gains of over 30c/kg in places. Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock averaged 5c dearer, however medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 32c/kg better. Heavy weight yearlings to feed improved by 14c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers averaged 4c to 7c better, while medium weights to feed lifted in price by 16c to 21c/kg. Heavy grown steers and bullocks averaged 18c to 20c/kg dearer, however some of the improvements were due to the better quality penned. The number of cows penned increased and similar to the previous week, processors absorbed the larger supply and lifted prices further by 13c to 17c and up to 26c/kg in places.

Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock averaged 272c and made to 294.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed made to 307.2c, with a large sample averaging around 290c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed averaged 284c and made to 290.2c, while some going to processors reached 306.2c/kg. Most light weight yearling heifers to restockers or background sold around 233c, with some to processors reaching 252.2c to average 242c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed sold mostly from 262c to 272c, with sales to 285c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to processors generally sold around 266c, with the occasional sale to 311.2c/kg.

Heavy grown steers to export processors averaged close to 294c, with some supplementary fed lines reaching 316.2c/kg. Bullocks sold from 280c to 312.2c/kg, with the younger classes selling in the higher end of the price range. Medium weight 2 score cows averaged 207c and the 3 scores averaged 229c/kg. Heavy 3 scores averaged 242c, while good heavy cows made to 268.2c in pen lots to average 256c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 271.2c/kg.

There was a quality line up of cattle today, from heavy export right through to good quality weaners.

The cow market was up 10 to 15c in places with top cows making 268.2c from the Gibson Partnership. Young bullocks made up to 306.2c most making 300c.
