The trend of much larger numbers coming forward into the saleyards continued with the supply of stock almost doubling the previous week’s level.

Cattle were drawn from a wide area including South Australia and New South Wales. Export buyer attendance was generally good and all were operating along with the usual feeder operators plus a fair line up of restockers. Price trends experienced mixed results with light weight yearling steers to restockers in demand while medium and heavy weight yearling steers to feed received very little change in price. This trend also flowed onto the medium and heavy weight yearling heifers to feed. However, light weight yearling heifers suffered losses of 20c to 30c/kg and more in places. A very large yarding of cows sold to a much cheaper market with losses of 11c to 22c/kg fairly common with the plain condition lines the least affected.

Steer calves made to 386.2c with lesser quality mixed sex lines averaging 258c/kg. Vealer steers returning to the paddock made to 354.2c with most around 340c/kg. Vealer heifers to feed or background made to 278.2c the largest numbers averaging 265c/kg. Light weight yearling steers mostly sold to restockers at an average of 325c with the occasional pen to 360.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 289c and made to 310.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed generally sold in the early to mid 280c/kg range with some to 290.2c/kg. The better lines of light weight yearling heifers averaged in the early to mid 260c/kg range however the lesser quality lines averaged 227c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 268c and made to 275.2c and heavy weights to feed averaged 272c and made to 279.2c/kg.

A small selection of heavy steers to export slaughter reached 268c and a handful of bullocks made to 280.2c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows returning to the paddock averaged 190c and made to 204.2c/kg. While the medium weight 2 scores to processors averaged 184c/kg. The best of the medium weights averaged 206c and made to 211.2c/kg. A large selection of good heavy cows mostly sold around 213c with occasional sales to 231.2c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 243.2c/kg.

With an extra 2800 head of cattle the market struggled to maintain the previous week’s prices. Export cattle were the most affected with bullocks and 4 score cows back 20 to 25 cents on average. Feeder heifers and steers were back 5-8 cents.

A very good quality line up of weaners were penned with the better end of steers getting over 260c. Plainer lines struggled and lost around 20c on the previous week. – Jordan Wenham, GDL Dalby.
