Trevor Hess, NLRS 08/02/2024

Yarding 7228 Change +6454

Cattle numbers at Dalby increased by a massive 6,454 head to 7,228 following the very short supply the previous week.

Buyer attendance was good and all were operating. Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock lifted in price by 13c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 8c dearer and heavy weights sold to a market 20c/kg better.

Light weight yearling heifers returning to the paddock were well supplied and averaged 10c/kg less. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed were noticeably dearer.

However the large selection of cows could not maintain the high levels of the previous week and lost 10c to 13c/kg. Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock made to a top of 560c with a large sample averaging 446c and poor quality lines at 324/kg.

Yearling steers under 330kg made to 485c to average 424c with one steer with show ring potential reaching a very isolated 878c/kg.

Yearling steers to feed for the domestic market averaged from 388c to 405c with some to 436c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to 398c to average 376c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers returning to the paddock made to 388c to average 321c and lesser quality lines 256c/kg. Medium and heavy weight yearling heifers to feed made to 360c with most from 323c to 347c/kg. A small selection of bullocks made to 326c to average 320c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows averaged 239c and made to 249c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 267c and averaged 260c and good heavy weight cows averaged 270c and made to 273c/kg. Heavy weight bulls sold to 293c/kg.

Grant Daniel Long report:

Numbers jumped this week in Dalby following the small yarding last week due to the heavy rains. A full panel of buyers were in attendance and operating. Overall, despite the large supply of cattle the market held up very well with most classes firm and even a bit dearer in places. The exception to this was seen in the cow prices with heavy fat cows back 10c/kg and store cows back 15c/kg and lightweight yearling heifers which were also 10c/kg softer in places. Top sales in the lightweight weaner steers were up significantly, with sales up to 560c/kg with a fair number of steers around 520c/kg for real lightweights. Cows and calves made up to $1700.
Next week GDL are selling 1st.
