Big data focus for lotfeeders’ BeefEx 2018 conference

by Beef Central, 10 July 2018

BIG data and technology, and how it is utilised within agriculture will feature strongly in conference sessions during the Australian Lot Feeders Association’s BeefEx 2018 conference being held in Brisbane in October.

Registrations are now open for the grainfed beef industry’s premier event – likely to attract more than 500 delegates from around the country and overseas, for a celebration and showcase of the sector’s achievements.

The grainfed beef industry’s major conference this year will be held from 8-10 October at Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds Convention Centre.

Big data and technology will feature prominently in a number of conference sessions, along with consumer trends, markets, economics, production, finance and leadership. An impressive lineup of leading international and Australian speakers will make presentations during the program, explaining how the latest thinking in these areas can be applied to feedlot and beef supply chain businesses.

One of the keynote speakers this year will be Stephen Scheeler, former CEO of Facebook Australia and New Zealand, whose topic is “The Digital Invasion: An insider’s guide to the coming revolution.”

In his time with Facebook, Mr Scheeler helped drive the innovation and technology disruption we’re seeing in the world today. In his BeefEx presentation, he will share insights about what Facebook and the tech giants think about innovation, data and technology, and what this means for the future in agribusiness. Full program details can be accessed via a link at the base of this page.

Held every two years, BeefEx is designed to draw together feedlot operators and their staff, nutritionists, veterinarians, backgrounders, regulators, service providers, transport operators and others involved in the grainfed industry and beef supply chain.

Tess Herbert

ALFA president Tess Herbert said delegates this year can expect to walk away informed, inspired, motivated and better connected with their industry peers.

“BeefEx had undergone some big changes in 2018, having moved to a new venue at the Brisbane Showgrounds, to give the event a fresh feel. The Brisbane Showgrounds is centrally located and adjacent to a vibrant hotel and dining precinct for the convenience of delegates,” Ms Herbert said.

“Following the success of our SmartBeef event held last year in Armidale, we are looking forward to a refreshed and exciting BeefEx in Brisbane,” she said.

“ALFA aims to position its members to be at the forefront of profitability, innovation and sustainability, so we are selecting speakers and program topics to take our membership forward in these areas,” Ms Herbert said.

Awards a highlight

The conference will also profile and reward leaders and emerging stakeholders in the industry, with presentations including:

  • The Young Lot Feeder of the Year Award
  • Excellence in Feedlot Education Medal
  • Innovation Award
  • Top Gun Award, and
  • The Communicate Your Research Competition.

The Awards program is always a highlight of the conference, celebrating achievement in the industry and providing an insight to innovations coming down the line.

Networking program

An extensive networking program will be held across the three days of the conference.

These events are an important opportunity for industry stakeholders to connect with each other, provide ng plenty of opportunities for informal sharing of information and knowledge.

Ms Herbert said ALFA not only welcomed but encouraged the involvement of those from outside the lotfeeding industry in all aspects of the beef supply chain to attend BeefEx.

“We are a diverse industry with links to many aspects of the beef sector and we find that people benefit hugely from interacting with others from across the beef sector including meat processors, animal health suppliers, grassfed beef producers, agricultural and university students and researchers and policy makers,” she said.
