Live Export

Vale Peter Lord

Beef Central 26/10/2016

A memorial service will be held in Toowoomba this Saturday to celebrate the life of the late northern cattle industry identity Peter Lord.

Mr Lord was a well-known member of Quality Livestock team run and owned by the Late John Montague of Townsville.

He was based mostly in Darwin and remained living there following ‘Monty’’s death and subsequent company closure.

He then went freelance doing export activities for the late Sid Parker of South East Asian Livestock Services and for David Heath with North Australia Cattle Company up until 2007.

He was also a participating member of the Queensland and Northern Livestock Exporters’ Associations.

David Heath said ‘Lordy’ as he was well known touched everyone in the old exporters industry, “with his cultured dictation and sense of humour”.

“Many may remember Peter for his worldly outlook, but he was a friend to all,” Mr Heath said.

“He along with many of us do not fall into the legend category often used now, but a bloody good bloke missed by mostly ex-industry participants.”

Long-time Queensland livestock buyer Steve Grose met Mr Lord when he was briefly based in Karumba, working John Montague’s Quality Livestock.

“I have very fond memories of late nights and long lunches with him,” Mr Grose said.

“I later worked for SEALS under Sid Parker and we utilised Peters skills in loading cattle in Darwin for many years.

“Peter was a true gentleman with a heart of gold and the ability to get along with anyone and was very well known around Darwin and lunches will never be the same without him.

“His legendary golf skills that only came up at the annual Live Exporters golf days will never be forgotten.

“Rest in Peace old friend.”

Due to the nature and remoteness of his passing Mr Lord’s immediate family decided to cremate Peter in Darwin and hold this service at a later time which is now approaching.

Peter’s funeral with be held at The Toowoomba Preparatory School Chapel, 2 Campbell Street, Toowoomba, at 10:30am Saturday, 29 October, 2016, with a good old fashioned wake to follow.

A beuatiful service was held for Peter in Toowoomba yesterday – further to memories already shared there I wish add that Peter was also a great friend and a huge support to me at Monty’s passing and during the months it took to wind up Quality Livestock P/L.

What Peter didn’t know about the beef cattle industry you could write on your thumb nail. A wonderful man, sadly missed by all.
    RIP Peter Lord.

No other words can describe what has already been said, Peter was ‘a true gentleman’ and could dictate a marvellous piece of prose. The late John Montague ‘Monty’ gave me my first true insight into the Livex industry – as a stockman on several voyages. It was an eye opener to say the least but rewarding. The preparation was left up to Lordy. While Monty was the eternal optimist, Lordy was the pacifier.

After moving to Townsville to assist Monty, Peter rented a unit near to where I lived. I often called around to chew the fat so to speak on all matters Livex over the regulation cup of coffee & occasional ‘businessman’s lunch’. I gained considerable insight & knowledge on the trade not to mention the tales of yesteryear about industry stalwarts now passed.

    Lordy may you RIP.
