Applications open for beef industry directors course

Beef Central, 22/11/2016

Applications are now open for the Australian Institute of Company Directors course, sponsored by Cattle Council of Australia and Meat and Livestock Australia.

Cattle Council and MLA are sponsoring the course to provide the opportunity for grassfed beef producers to develop their skills in corporate governance, for the second year in a row.

2016 AICD participant and previous Rising Champion state finalist, Geoff Birchnell, said he unreservedly recommended all producers apply for the course.

“The skills, knowledge and contacts gained through completing the AICD course will place you at the forefront of opportunities in the Australian beef industry.

“Our industry is rapidly evolving and it is critical that we have the skilled people to navigate the path forward,” Mr Birchnell said.

Mr Birchnell said that farming today transcends the paddock and many important decisions regarding industry are made at the boardroom table.

Producers must adapt and develop the skills to effect change in this governance environment.

“Agriculture is cyclical in nature and inherently has a higher risk profile than most other industries, this requires a greater level of governance than most other industries.

“Identifying risk, and strategic risk planning can create tremendous opportunities. Perhaps historically agriculture hasn’t been tuned into this, but we can all collectively improve.

Cattle Council president Howard Smith agreed with the 2016 AICD participant, that leadership was the way forward for industry.

‘The long-term productivity and profitability of the grassfed beef industry is reliant on strong, educated leaders,” Mr Smith said.

“This course provides training and accreditation in leadership and governance for cattle producers looking to advance to leadership positions in the industry, or enhance their current skills.

The AICD course is a five-day comprehensive program that has been designed to focus on areas of business management and skills development that are specific to cattle producers.

The course is administered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and participants will undertake assessment to achieve official recognition as a Graduate of the course.

Applications are open to all grassfed cattle producers that have a desire to provide leadership within the beef industry.

Applications opened today and will close midnight, 29 January 2017.
