Weekly rainfall wrap, week ending 26 May 2015

Beef Central, 27/05/2015

2015-5-27-rainfall-mapSome falls of around 50mm were recieved in small pockets of New South Wales and Western Australia in the past week.

Totals of between 10mm and 50mm were recorded across a larger area spanning the Pilbara, the northern Gascoyne, and small areas of the southern coast of Western Australia; parts of coastal South Australia; southwestern, central and eastern Victoria; northern and western Tasmania; most of eastern and northern New South Wales; parts of southern Queensland and in small pockets on the east coast of Queensland.

At the beginning of the week, a cold front and an upper level trough tracked across southeastern Australia, associated with a low pressure system that passed over Bass Strait. The systems brought moderate rainfall to western Tasmania, northeastern Victoria and central New South Wales. Light rain fell along the southern coastal regions as a high pressure system located in the Great Australian Bight directed a southerly airstream into the southeast mainland behind the trough.

An upper level trough and associated surface feature located over southwestern Queensland generated moderate rainfall in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales early in the week. As the trough moved eastwards across central Queensland and New South Wales, moderate rainfall was recorded in parts of northern and eastern New South Wales, and eastern Victoria before the system contracted off the east coast.

A cloudband associated with a middle level trough dominated rainfall in Western Australia. The slow-moving rainband formed early in the week and persisted throughout the week, producing moderate rainfall totals across large parts of the Pilbara, extending into the eastern Gascoyne and Western Australia’s interior.

A moist southeasterly onshore flow was directed onto the eastern coastal areas of Queensland, bringing light to moderate falls in pockets of the coastal fringe late in the week.

Rainfall totals exceeding 50 mm were recorded in parts of the Pilbara and northern Gascoyne in Western Australia and in small pockets of eastern New South Wales. The highest weekly total was 103 mm at Newman Aero in Western Australia.
