Rainfall across Australia for the week ending 15 July, 2014.

Rainfall for the past week was recorded in the Southwest Land Division of Western Australia, across northwestern Western Australia and in the central parts of the Northern Territory, southern South Australia, Victoria, the alpine region of New South Wales and in Tasmania.

A vigorous cold front crossed the southwest of Western Australia at the start of the week, with some light to moderate falls. The front continued across southern South Australia, then Victoria and New South Wales.  An associated and intense complex low pressure system located over Bass Strait resulted in some patchy moderate falls in the Alpine regions of New South Wales and Victoria, and in southern South Australia, with light but widespread rainfall over Victoria, southern New South Wales, eastern South Australia and northern Tasmania.

Another strong cold front pushed through the southern States mid-week, with western Tasmania recording moderate falls, along with areas of the Victorian Alps and southeastern South Australia.  A surface trough formed behind the cold front south of Tasmania, bringing more rainfall to western Tasmania.

A low pressure system formed along a surface trough over the Pilbara area of Western Australia, with a rainband developing in the northwest of the country, bringing rainfall to both northwest Western Australia and the Northern Territory around Alice Springs.  Another front approached and crossed Western Australia at the week’s end.

Falls in excess of 200 mm were recorded in an isolated area on the coast in the West Kimberley region of Western Australia, with the highest weekly rainfall recorded at Cygnet Bay with 242 mm.

Rainfall totals between 50 mm and 100 mm were recorded in a number of small areas: on the coastal strip of the Kimberley region in Western Australia, in the central Northern Territory, the Victorian Alps, southeastern South Australia, and the west coast of Tasmania.

Rainfall totals between 25 mm and 50 mm were recorded in the Kimberley and the southwest coast of Western Australia, a large area of southern Northern Territory, southern South Australia, central and western Victoria, and western Tasmania.

Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded surrounding areas of higher totals and across most of the southern coastline of mainland Australia, northeastern Tasmania, inland southeastern New South Wales, as well as the northwestern Western Australia and in southern parts of the Northern Territory.
