Wagga sale 2 Mar 2015: Prices improve up to 10c

Leann Dax, 03/03/2015

The seasonal shortage of top quality domestic and export slaughter cattle in the Riverina gave the market an edge this week, with prices improving by up to 10c/kg at Wagga Wagga, NSW on Monday.

The trend was evident over all slaughter cattle, where the best heavy Bullocks sold 9c dearer to reach a top price of 227.2c, while grown steers over 500kg made from 200c to 245c/kg.

Trade cattle experienced stronger demand overall classes with domestic processors struggling to outbid feedlot buyers across all lines of well-bred grass finished steers and heifers. Generally trade prices were 2c to 5c/kg dearer

Vealers were also in demand, particularly the lighter weight portion with prices 10c/kg higher odd sales more. At the same time heavier vealer heifers were 6c dearer with the best of the vealers topping at 250.6c/kg.

Store cattle prices this week responded to rain storms across the region and prices continued to climb. Weaner store cattle sold into the Cootamundra area as well as Adelong, Nowra, Wodonga and the local areas. This resulted in prices jumping 10c-16c/kg with weaner steers making from 220c-268.2c/kg boosting steer values by $30-$50/head. There wasn’t the urgency in the heifer portion with prices ranging from 195c to 219c/kg.

The smaller group of feedlot buyers did not affect values with prices generally unchanged. Medium weight steers 400-500kg made from 212c -247.2c to average 232.7c/kg. Angus heifers suitable to feed on met with stronger competition and sold to 231c pushing overall heifer prices 8c/kg higher. Medium weight heifers to place on feed averaged 217.5c/kg.

A buoyant cow market lifted prices 6c-10c/kg higher. Heavy well finished cows to slaughter were in demand with prices ranging from 182c to 199c/kg. Leaner cows were keenly contested making from 155c to 194c/kg. Bidding intensified for lighter weight cows to turnout with store buyers paying from 147c-180c/kg.
