Roma Store Sale 5 Aug 2014: Hvy heifers to 165c/kg

James Nason, 06/08/2014

NLRS sale commentary:

Yarding 5500,  Change -19

Numbers remained steady with a good selection of both steers and heifers. The quality of the young cattle was very mixed and comprised both yearlings and weaners. There were good lines available from local, western regions and areas further north, while there was limited southern restocker activity with most buyers coming from local, central and Darling Downs areas. Good quality cattle sold strongly to show a slightly dearer trend. Processors were active on the good conditioned vealers and lightweight yearlings, along with a number of well finished yearling heifers.

Vealer steers to restock sold from 140c to 174c for the plainer D muscled categories, while those displaying a stronger C muscle pattern made from 146c to 197c/kg. Light and medium weight yearling steers to restock and feed sold from 132c to 197c, depending on muscle and breed quality. Heavy yearling steers to feed sold from 178c to 185c/kg. Good quality yearling heifers to restock and feed sold to a top of 162c for C muscled lines, with the majority of the plainer D muscled lines making between 123c and 144c/kg.

The quality of the grown steers was very mixed with this reflected in the price range. Plainer quality steers sold from 118c to 192c for well-bred heavy feeders. Grown heifers made from 118c to 159c/kg, with processors active on the well finished lots. There was a full complement of processors in attendance and restocker demand increased. Trends were dearer, with the 3 and 4 scores to slaughter up to 4c dearer, while plain conditioned cows to restock experienced stronger gains. PTIC cows sold to restockers to a top of 139c/kg. There was a limited supply of cow and calf units and they sold to a top of $560/unit.
