Weekly NLRS market commentary

Yarding 8029 Change -1787

Total yarding numbers declined by 20%. Overall, the quality of store cattle penned was mixed, with larger numbers of drought affected cattle contained in the yarding. Fewer restockers appeared present at the sale and only top quality light weight yearling steers received similar competition as the previous sale. All the usual feedlot buyers were in attendance but were more selective when purchasing. All classes of yearling heifers were cheaper as quality and buyer competition declined. A large consignment of grown steers from far western Queensland bucked the trend and feedlot buyers paid up to 7c more for suitable medium weight grown steers. Cows and calves sold to $900/unit.

Light weight yearling steers sold to 290c and averaged 263c, down 1c, while slightly heavier weaner steers made to 292c and averaged 269c, up 3c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed earned to 275c and averaged 260c, down 7c, while those returning to oats crops or paddock hit 270c and averaged 249c, down 11c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers sold to 273c and averaged 257c, down 17c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers to restocker buyers topped at 218c and averaged 188c, down 30c, and those to feedlot buyers reached 243c and averaged around 220c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed made to 240c and averaged 218c, while those to restockers earned to 190c and averaged 187c, down 34c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to processors reached 210c and averaged 204c, down 4c/kg.
