Martin Bunyard, 19/08/2015

NLRS sale commentary:

Yarding 10811 Change 1632

Large numbers of cattle continued to be consigned to Roma store sale. Drought affected cattle from Western Queensland dominated the yarding with 48% steers, 35% heifers, and 17% cows plus cows and calves. The big numbers of light calves on offer struggled to maintain the previous sales prices, while good heavy weight yearling steers to feed added 12c/kg. Increased competition from restockers and feedlot buyers pushed medium weight yearling heifer prices higher. Restocker buyers were also very active in 2 and 3 score cows. Steer calves sold to 350c and averaged 324c, down 11c, while heifer calves made to 288c and averaged 246c, down 30c/kg. Light weight yearling steers reached 346c and averaged between 298c and 315c/kg for good quality sorts. Medium weight yearling steers to feed topped at 305c and averaged 290c, up 13c, while those returning to the paddock hit 310c and averaged 300c, down 2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed earned to 309c and averaged 298c, up 12c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers to restocker buyers sold to 306c and averaged 248c/kg. Those to processors made to 288c and averaged 252c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed earned to 260c and averaged 246c, while those to restockers hit 306c and averaged 276c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to processors reached 246c and averaged 226c, up 8c/kg. Plain conditioned 2 score cows sold between 184c and 212c, while medium weight 3 score cows to restockers hit 229c and averaged 224c, up 4c/kg. Heavy weight 4 score cows sold to 256c and averaged 249c, up 4c/kg. Cows and calves sold to $1,280 and averaged $1,052/unit.
