LAST week’s wet weather in some parts of eastern Australia dampened numbers somewhat on AuctionsPlus, with 9734 head offered on the online marketing platform – down about 2000 head on the previous week.

Although the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator may have slipped last week, results for young cattle on Friday’s AuctionsPlus sale and Tuesday’s Special Feeder Sale bucked that trend with rises across most categories.

Highlights in young cattle sales included 209kg Brangus cross steers from Kingaroy in southern QLD’s South Burnett district making 453c or $948, and 269kg Angus heifers from Singleton, NSW selling for 420c and their heavier sisters at 308kg making 461c.

Tuesday’s Special Feeder Cattle Sale on AuctionsPlus saw an offering of 2652 steers and heifers from NSW, Vic and SA. Most were offered on a forward contract basis for delivery September through to January, with delivery weights from 380kg-500kg.

Prices ranged from 350c/kg live to 390c/kg live, to average 370c. The twice-achieved top price was locked-in for cattle to be delivered in October and November.

The sale saw 12 feedlots pricing cattle, and drew the keen eyes of a range of agents and producers looking for forward pricing indicators leading into spring.

With prices of 365c achieved as far out as December, it still remains unclear when the usual spring price drop will occur – and indeed how significant the drop will be. CLICK HERE for full feeder sale report.
