NVLX Wodonga 31 Jan 2017: Vealers climb 13c

Cattle prices have began the week at NVLX on a solid note in a yarding of just over 2000.

The highlight was a lift of more than 13c/kg for vealers. The National Livestock Reporting Service (NLRS) said well finished European veal and their crosses regularly sold at 342-378.2c/kg.

A mixed selection of grass finished heifers gained 12c with domestic buyers influencing the dearer trends. The bulk of the trade heifers 400-500kg made from 300-340c to average 318c/kg.

Steers suitable for the trade were again in limited supply and sold to a mix of buying interest from processors and feedlots. Trade steers lifted 3-5c selling at 310-330c to average 31c/kg.

The main drafts of medium weight feeders steers sold to strong local feedlot competition which pushed rates 8c/kg higher. The bulk of the better shaped steers selling from 308c-350c/kg. The lighter weight feed steers made from 306-342c/kg.

The best rate on a cents per kilogram basis paid for lighter weight heifers to feed on was 331c, while limited other sales ranged from 290-326c/kg.

With reports producers are finding it difficult to finish heavy steers and bullocks, processors are struggling to secure quality lines. This saw prices jump 4-9c/kg with prices ranging from 288-344c/kg.

Cow numbers climbed to 629 with all weights and grades represented. Cow prices continued to hold firm. The best rates are being paid for well shaped younger types. Heavy cows sold at 242-260c/kg. Leaner types eased 2c making from 226-253c/kg. Store cows sold at 205-220c/kg.
