A crew member from the live export vessel Ocean Drover was in a serious but stable condition in hospital today after being injured in a fire yesterday.

The ship’s owner, Wellard Rural Exports, said another crew member injured in the fire on the vessel was released from hospital today.

The vessel was being prepared for the loading of 6000 cattle when the fire started early yesterday. The fire was contained in the crew accommodation area and bridge last night and the company said it was making alternative arrangements to transport the livestock.

Wellard CEO Mauro Balzarini said the incident demonstrated the capabilities and professionalism of emergency crews and systems to protect lives and infrastructure at Fremantle Port in the event of an emergency.

“Incidents such as this are never welcome, yet they are anticipated.

“Yesterday’s coordinated response by fire fighters, paramedics, hospital personnel and other agencies was exceptional and Wellard is grateful for their efforts,” Mr Balzarini said.

Wellard said an investigation by the appropriate authorities into the cause of the fire began today and the company will provide any assistance necessary.

A full damage assessment will also be undertaken once it is safe to do so, the company said in a statement. The vessel’s other 45 crew members are being accommodated in Fremantle.
