A SIMMENTAL bull sold in South Australia on Thursday has set a new breed record high, making $160,000 when bought by Central Queensland seedstock breeder Brett Nobbs, Nobbs Cattle Co, Duaringa.
Eighteen-month-old Woonallee Las Vegas (P) hit the jackpot for vendors, Tom and Lizzy Baker, Woonallee Simmentals, Millicent SA, eclipsing the previous breed record they set in 2013 by an extraordinary $114,000.
Mr Nobbs is best known for his NCC Red Brahman seedstock business, but also breeds Simbrah and Simmental bulls in smaller numbers.
Underbidders were longstanding Woonallee clients also from Queensland, Doug and Jan Bradshaw, Blue Dog Creek Simmentals, Wandoan.
The previous breed record of $46,000 was set at Woonallee’s 2013 annual sale for Woonallee Gold Rush, also sold into Queensland.
The result elevates Simmentals into third place in Beef Central’s database of beef cattle breed records, accessible below.
Woonallee has maintained a semen interest in the record-breaking young sire.
In summary, Woonallee sold all 102 Simmental and Sim Angus in a full clearance on Thursday, averaging $9791. More details in tonight’s Weekly Genetics Review.
